Tired of keeping that guitar tuned? Then consider EverTune's bridge a godsend. Unlike Gibson's steeply priced Robot Guitar, which tunes itself, EverTune's latest effort is affordable, compatible with existing guitars, and acts more like a maintenance tool. According to DVICE's review, once you tune the guitar, the bridge will keep it locked in perfect pitch indefinitely.

According to EverTune, the bridge relies on "simple mechanical principles." As each string or tuner post loosens, the springs in the bridge compensate, maintaining the exact amount of tension you set the first time you tuned the guitar, no matter how hard or how often you play. That all sounds good, but we have to wonder: does it sound good? A guitar's tone largely depends on how freely, and for how long, its strings resonate. The age-old problem with fancy, locking bridge designs is that, frequently, a guitar will be forced to sacrifice its sustain and tonal richness. Since we haven't played the thing, we can't comment on the EverTune, but we will say this: would you sacrifice the muscle in your '71 Charger for better gas mileage?
Continue reading EverTune Bridge Claims to Keep Guitar Tuned Forever

EverTune Bridge Claims to Keep Guitar Tuned Forever originally appeared on Switched on Sat, 09 Jan 2010 13:35:00 EST.
With Wall Street in disgrace and the economy in a nosedive, where should the country turn for financial advice? Would you ever think gamers? Since 2003, players on the massively multiplayer online role playing game (MMORPG) Entropia has been steadily building an economy that now boasts a daily turnover of $1.25 million per day. Entropia sports a real cash economy model of play where monetary units in the game (PEDs) have a fixed 10:1 exchange rate with the US Dollar and players use this currency to purchase anything from weapons and other items to pieces of virtual real estate. In fact, Club NEVERDIE, an asteroid space resort in the game, set a world record as the "Most Expensive Virtual Object" when it was purchased for $100,000 USD in 2007, an investment with an estimated value over $1 million USDs today. The game is free to join but like the real world, it often takes money to make money and many players treat gaming in Entropia like a job.

We had a chance to speak with some of those who have had tremendous success in the game (one player put his brother through college using his earnings) and they had a few words of advice for fallen Wall Street investors, who may have overlooked one of the core tenets of investing:
Be the envy of your hipster friends with the stylish "Moof" bicycle from industrial design aggregators Areaware, which we recently caught on video. The top tube of this European-style ride has recessed solar-powered front and tail lights. With vintage-inspired bikes fetching prices in the thousands, the Moof might be a steal at $500. Use it to hit the streets for some Stroopwafels and find your way home at night after a couple glasses of Genever. That's Dutch, yah!
This guy installs itself in the computer's startup as root, and once in place it can connect to a remote server and broadcast its location, allowing malicious users to take charge of the machine remotely. And since it has root access to the OS, the trojan can not only install additional components but can also modify existing apps, making this thing extremely difficult to remove.

According to a white paper released by Intego, at least 20,000 people may have downloaded the infected software -- which they'll get around to installing as soon as they finish those episodes of 'Celebrity Rehab' they grabbed at the same time. It seems that every mainstream tech innovation is followed closely behind by an answer from the porn industry. Like Roku's Netflix box, FyreTV's set-top player delivers a library of over 20,000 DVD-quality porn flicks from you to choose from - and it's wireless, so you don't need to run an ethernet cable into the bedroom. Check out the video for some work-safe screenshots and info about how the subscription-based system works.

During our trip to the desert, we took some time off from the convention floor to head over to the NextGen Home Experience. This super-green, 5,200 square-foot "smart" home boasts some smooth accoutrements, including a powerful home-automation system and a Microsoft Vista-based, centralized entertainment center and media server.

But there's nothing really new about a media server for your home, even one as slick as this Aspen Media version. No, what really caught our eye was the handsome leather floor tiles made from recycled BMW car leather. We're told they're as easily maintained as any floor surface, and will develop their own patina as time goes on. In a house filled with seen-it-before concepts like televisions disguised as mirrors, wireless remotes in every room and solar panels on the roof, we kept finding ourselves marveling at those dang tiles.
Have you ever wondered what a porn movie would look like in 3D? Well, we can't show you one of those racy films, but we can show you adult film star Belladonna's reaction when she watched one at the Adult Entertainment Expo. The technology involved is the Glacier IceBerg Entertainment System and it will work with any 3D-ready TV. According to Belladonna, there's no way to grasp the amazing nature of the technology without watching it yourself, but we'll just take her word for it.
GPS is no longer a technology that solely helps you get from point A to point B along the nation's highways and byways. Illustrating that point is a trend we noted at the recent Consumer Electronics Show: namely, the placement of GPS units into devices -- cameras, laptops -- that previously seemed to work just fine without them. Check out the following pages for some examples of the latest uses for GPS in gadgets.
Dell decided to tease the Consumer Electronics Show crowd with only a few details of its Mini 10 netbook computer, which comes with built-in GPS. We don't yet have details on how capable this device will be in regards to geotagging, directions or other functionality. We also don't know when -- and at what price -- the Mini 10 will become available, but we'll provide more details as they come.
Sony must be feeling good about geotagging and other location-based services, seeing as the company included a GPS chip in its Vaio P series netbook computer, announced at the show. ('Netbook' is another word for a very small, yet very capable, laptop.) With this functionality, the P lets you find points of interest based on your location, like restaurants, hotels and so on. Just like a regular GPS device, this clutch-purse-sized computer offers you routing and destination information, too. The P is coming in February for about $900.
In the not-so-obvious-but-brilliant GPS-enabled device category are three of Sony Electronics' camcorders, all announced at the show. The HDR-XR520V, HDR-XR500V and HDR-XR200V all include a GPS chip including NAVTEQ maps. You can "geotag" your video or still images, making it easy to show other people exactly where you were on that hiking trip.

These camcorders go a step beyond another GPS-enabled device introduced last year: the Nikon P6000 digital still camera. That camera has a GPS chip, but is limited to embedding your location information in the digital file. This is fine if you want to post your images to a Web site that utilizes geotagging information, but the Sony units actually display the maps on their LCD screens. This means that you can review where you've been right on the device instead of having to wait until you upload your image or video files to a computer or Web site. (Note: we don't suggest using these camcorders to plan driving routes or to get "unlost" during a camping trip.) The HDR-XR520V, HDR-XR500V and HDR-XR200V will begin shipping in March for about $1,500, $1,300 and $1,000 respectively.

(Editor's note: if you want to try geotagging with your digital still camera and aren't ready to drop big bucks on a new GPS-enabled camera or camcorder, maybe a GPS-enabled memory card from Eye-Fi is a way to get started.)
An obvious place to implant a GPS unit is a rear-view mirror. In fact, we wonder why this wasn't thought up before. Well, we're just glad the folks at Azentek came up with the SmartMirror. This $800 aftermarket replacement product sleekly puts a fully-functioning Navigon GPS unit right in the mirror. The screen can even be connected to a rear-facing camera on the back of your car to help you navigate while in reverse. Navigon may not be the first manufacturer that comes to mind when considering a GPS device, but this type of obvious innovation deserves a look.

CES wasn't the only convention packed with gadgets this January: The AVN Adult Entertainment Expo, which takes place alongside CES every year, was filled with the latest lovemaking technology from wireless iPod pleasure enhancers to adult videos in HD and 3-D. We teamed up with adult entertainment icon (and AVN Awards official presenter) BellaDonna to check out the new sex toys for 2009. First up: We-Vibe, a high-quality, rechargeable vibrator for women that can be worn during the act. Check out the video after the break to watch BellaDonna's report.
Continue reading Porn Star Belladonna Picks Top Sex Tech: We-Vibe

Porn Star Belladonna Picks Top Sex Tech: We-Vibe originally appeared on Switched on Sat, 17 Jan 2009 00:01:00 EST. The system uses a discreet transmitter to sync a vibrator (available in a full palette of Nano-matching colors) to a user's favorite playlist. No wires means one can slide one's iPod into a docking system while sliding into bed. And should anyone get bored of their playlist, all of OhMiBod's products work independently -- just like a regular vibrator. Watch the video for a demonstration.
Continue reading OhMiBod Unveils First Wireless Vibrator for the iPod

OhMiBod Unveils First Wireless Vibrator for the iPod originally appeared on Switched on Thu, 15 Jan 2009 23:27:00 EST. Cisco unveiled at CES a system of routers, players and a central media hub that sucks all your digital content into one place, and then lets you spit it out anywhere over your home network -- or even the Internet. Unlike other streaming media systems such as Sonos, Cisco's Linksys-branded products use a massive, centralized storage device (called the Media Hub) to store content, and because the system is connected to your home network, it can stream internet radio and let you access your files over the 'net. Best feature: All those iTunes songs you've purchased -- they'll work on the Cisco system. Check out the video for the details.
Continue reading Cisco Streams Your Media Anywhere

Cisco Streams Your Media Anywhere originally appeared on Switched on Thu, 15 Jan 2009 22:42:00 EST. Whether it was black-magic or the alignment of the planets, we're not sure, but scores of undead walking television sets descended upon the Las Vegas pavement to extract revenge on their manufacturers.

Or at least that's how the 'story' goes.

In reality, we were just being treated to a piece of performance art by the Electronics TakeBack Coalition, which was on hand with said band of 'zombies' to encourage television manufacturers to establish recycling programs for their old analog TVs in preparation for the DTV switch over.

We took our camera out and scored an interview with the group's leader, Robin Schneider, as well as some of the zombies themselves, and narrowly avoided having our brains eaten.

Check out the video after the break to get a taste of some of the hot, 'Thriller'--style dancing, zombie TV action.
Continue reading 'Zombies' Hit Trade Show to Encourage TV Recycling

'Zombies' Hit Trade Show to Encourage TV Recycling originally appeared on Switched on Thu, 15 Jan 2009 16:01:00 EST. You know Palm's on to something when reputable sites start to splinter around its newly announced OS and handset. PhoneArena's fledgling sister site, WebOS Arena, has it from a "credible source" that Best Buy will be the exclusive retailer for the Palm Pre. That means that Best Buy will be the only place other than Sprint where you'll find the Pre for purchase on US soil for the first 60 days after launch (whenever that might be). Assuming the rumor is true of course. Other than the Palm Pre, the biggest darling of CES has clearly been the Sony VAIO P Series Lifestyle PC. There has been plenty of coverage of the clutch-purse-like device, but we wanted to boil it down to just what you really need to know.

We spent some time with the tiny "don't call it a netbook" from Sony and came away quite impressed with it on the whole. We couldn't truly test any streaming media because the network connection was clogged with a million and one devices, but otherwise the speed of it was truly impressive. Despite having an Atom processor (and not even the top of the line model), the VAIO P in our brief tests ran Vista faster than most other netbooks with faster processors and can run Windows XP (which makes us wonder if Sony is cheating somehow).

The screen is bright and crisp, but probably too small for anyone who requires reading glasses, and the pointer nub requires tiny, nimble hands.

Starting at $899 the VAIO P isn't cheap, but it's as close to a full-featured ultra-portable notebook as you're going to get in that price range (though we haven't had time to really manhandle MSI's X-Slim 320 yet). Add in the instant-on, though surprisingly slow, cross-bar menu that anyone who has used a PSP or PS3 would be familiar with, and Sony has a real winner on its hands.

So who exactly is the VAIO P for? Well, if you want the smallest possible notebook and style and speed are important, but price is not, then you should seriously consider it when it becomes available in February.

Between inflation and unemployment, it does seem silly to cover more extravagant items. In-ear headphones, or earbuds, were in large demand, though, which we attribute to folks wanting to buy inexpensive advancements that enable them to get more out of their current gadgets. With the immense popularity of the iPod and iPhone, we think that the fine selection of earbuds we found at CES will fit that bill quite well.

Maxell M&M's Ear Buds

Maxell will begin offering these M&M-shaped earbuds in February for the attractive price of $9.99. Although we didn't get a chance to try them out, we can only imagine that whatever they may lack in fidelity is more than justified by their generous cuteness. Be sure to heed that "Not candy!" disclaimer.

The device can link to your headset via Bluetooth, or you can fulfill all your crime noir fantasies and talk directly to your wrist. Necessary? Probably not, but the touch screen device's sleek interface has to be seen to be believed: Check out our hands on video with LG after the break.
Continue reading LG Watch Phone Would Make Dick Tracy Proud

LG Watch Phone Would Make Dick Tracy Proud originally appeared on Switched on Tue, 13 Jan 2009 19:19:00 EST.
